 Damaris C. Baker, Elder

Session Liaison, Nominating Committee
Faith Formation Committee
Session Liaison, Interim Search Committee

I am Damaris Baker, ruling Elder and servant to the congregation.  I have been an active member of RPC since 2000.  Rockville Presbyterian Church (RPC) has been a meaningful and central part of the Baker family.   My husband, Richard P. Baker, grew up with RPC and it called to us as we began to build our own family.

As the Session Liaison to the Interim Search Committee, I am deeply aware of the importance of the task with which session has entrusted the Interim Search Committee. We are commissioned committee members entrusted with the work of finding an Interim Pastor and understand how the future of the congregation will be impacted.

As the Session Liaison to the Nominating Committee, I ensure the committee is comprised of congregational members.  The committee brings nominations to the congregation for the Session, the Board of Deacons, and the Trustees. It has been said that the Church Nominating Committee is the most important committee in the church. This is because the committee, by means of deciding who is nominated, strongly affects the direction and energy of the church. Thus it is not possible to underestimate the importance of the work of this committee.

As a member of Faith Formation Committee, I am engaged in the integrated process of ‘learning and practicing’ throughout all aspects of congregational and daily life. Faith formation is at the heart of what our living and being is all about.

Yet, O Lord, you are our God;
   we are the clay, and you are our potter;
   we are all the work of your hand. –Isaiah 64:8

Faith formation is at the heart of what the Christian life is all about. In many ways, we engage in the practices of our daily lives and the rituals of our faith communities—through worship, mission, working for justice and peace, evangelism, and education—so that our faith may be nurtured, enlivened, sustained, and formed. In this regard, the imagery offered by the prophet Isaiah of Potter God forming humanity, God’s created own, is an appropriate vision for how we might view the ministry of faith formation.
